Year 1 Maths Autumn Block 1

Year 1 place value worksheets, year 1 place value lesson PowerPoints, Year 1 maths mastery place value resources

Place value is one of the building blocks of mathematical understanding, and is always the first unit at the beginning of the Autumn term to help ensure that children have a good grounding in the basics of maths, before moving on to more complex learning. The year 1 maths national curriculum for number and place value states that pupils should be able to:

  • count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
  • count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s
  • given a number, identify 1 more and 1 less
  • identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least
  • read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words

The good news is, you can use our number and place value resources to help you teach this in a child-friendly, age-appropriate way, whilst saving you time, to help ensure that children are receiving the correct coverage of the maths national curriculum.

Our maths worksheets for 5 year olds are designed to be engaging and fun for children, so they won’t even know they’re learning.

What is place value in year 1?

In year 1, children should learn about place value to 100. This involves counting forwards and backwards to 100, counting and reading numbers to 100, identify 1 more and 1 less and represent numbers using objects and representations.

Our place value resources in year 1 are split into small steps, to help you break down the maths curriculum, and include a teaching PowerPoint, place value fluency worksheets and activity cards, and reasoning and problem solving worksheets. Children will learn key maths vocabulary including tens, ones and hundreds to help children understand the value of each number.

Year 1 place value resources

If you have a maths provision based approach to learning, our counting forwards enhanced provision activity is ideal, and is a brilliant hands-on, engaging approach to maths learning. You can also use our counting objects to 10 worksheets to help children count accurately. You can also use our counting backwards differentiated worksheets to help children with their counting backwards skills. To save even more time, use our year 1 place value planning resources to help guide you through the week’s lessons – with links to the national curriculum, key maths vocabulary, and differentiation.
