Small Steps: Ordering numbers enhanced provision/practical

Aligned with the maths mastery approach, this  Year 1 | Ordering Numbers to 10 Enhanced Provision | Practical Activity is designed to go alongside our year 1 maths mastery lesson presentations, where the learning has been modelled. This activity is designed to cover the following objectives:

  • Topic: place value>counting objects.
  • Small Steps: count objects
  • National Curriculum: Count to ten. Count, read and write numbers to 10 in numerals. Identify and represent numbers using objects..

Instructions: Cut out each number card, and add them to a tuff tray. Ask children to pick up the cards and put them in order from 1-10. The number cards can also be used as handy number flashcards!

Prompts: Ask children to explain how they have counted – could there be a quicker way of counting? How many more are there are one card, over another.

Differentiate: Ask children to order numbers 1-20. Match objects to each number card.
