What is taught in Phase 3 phonics?

Phase 3 builds on Phase 2 by introducing new graphemes, mainly digraphs such as ch, sh, th and ai, as well as trigraphs like igh and air.

Pupils learn to read and spell a wider range of words by blending and segmenting with these new spellings. Phase 3 also introduces additional tricky words and supports pupils in reading and writing short captions and sentences.

Phase 3 phonics worksheets, words and activities

Our Phase 3 phonics worksheets and activities are designed for practical, structured teaching across the week. You’ll find resources to support:

  • teaching and revising Phase 3 digraphs and trigraphs
  • blending and reading Phase 3 words
  • segmenting and spelling simple words using Phase 3 graphemes
  • picture-based activities to support sound recognition
  • Phase 3 phonics games to build fluency through repetition

For a ready-to-use reading task, try our Phase 3 read and colour activity, designed to encourage careful decoding and comprehension.

Phase 3 word cards and sound mats

Use clear visuals and consistent prompts to support quick recall of new graphemes. Our Phase 3 grapheme and picture cards work well for quick-fire practise, small-group teaching and revisiting previously taught sounds.

If you want a classroom reference point for handwriting and spelling, our Phase 3 sound mat (precursive) supports pupils as they practise writing words and captions using Phase 3 graphemes.
