What is taught in Phase 2 phonics?

Phase 2 phonics introduces pupils to their first grapheme-phoneme correspondences, often starting with simple single-letter sounds before moving on to early double-letter spellings such as ck, ff, ll and ss.

During Phase 2, pupils begin blending sounds together to read simple words and segmenting words into sounds for spelling. This is where many pupils start reading and writing CVC words such as sat, pin and tap.

Phase 2 phonics worksheets, CVC words and activities

Our Phase 2 phonics worksheets and activities are designed to support structured teaching and regular practice across the week. You’ll find resources to help pupils develop:

  • early blending and segmenting with CVC words
  • grapheme recognition and sound recall
  • decodable reading practice using Phase 2 words
  • early spelling using phoneme frames and word-building activities
  • fine motor control and letter formation alongside phonics teaching

For an engaging decoding task, try our Phase 2 read and colour activity. For focused reading practice, our Phase 2 decodable word cards help pupils blend and read words linked to the teaching sequence.

CVC word blending and spelling support

CVC word practice is a key part of Phase 2 phonics. Pupils need regular opportunities to hear, blend, read and spell simple words using the sounds they have been taught.

Use our CVC phoneme frame to help pupils segment sounds and spell simple words accurately. You can also explore our wider CVC words resources for extra blending and decoding practice.

Fine motor and letter formation in Phase 2

Phase 2 phonics often overlaps with early writing development. Alongside sound recognition and blending, pupils also need support with pencil control, fine motor skills and correct letter formation.

Our fine motor letter formation worksheets provide structured practice for pupils who are beginning to form letters confidently. For a hands-on activity, explore our Phase 2 cutting caterpillars activity, which supports sound recognition alongside early fine motor development.
