Phase 2 Cutting Caterpillars Activity – Phonics Family Range

Build phonics and fine motor skills with our Phase 2 Cutting Caterpillars Activity, made in partnership with Katie from Phonics Family. Children cut out picture tiles and match them to the caterpillar labelled with the same initial sound – perfect for phonics practice, scissor skills and concentration in EYFS and early Year 1.

What’s included

  • Blank caterpillar mats for each single-letter Phase 2 GPC (two mats per page)
  • Picture tiles for children to cut out and sort by initial sound
  • Clear layouts designed for independent or small-group work

How to set up

  1. Print the blank caterpillar sheets (two per page).
  2. Print the picture sheets and cut out the tiles.
  3. Provide glue sticks and scissors; model safe cutting and sticking.

How to play

  1. Choose a caterpillar (e.g. s, a, t, p).
  2. Say the sound together, then name each picture tile.
  3. Children cut out and stick the tiles that start with the same initial sound onto the caterpillar’s body.
  4. Repeat with new letters; extend by oral blending or writing the word under the tile.

Why teachers love it

  • Matches Phase 2 phonics while developing scissor control and hand–eye coordination
  • Engaging, low-prep activity for provision, interventions or home learning
  • Created with Phonics Family for a multi-sensory, play-based approach
