Children cut out picture tiles and match them to the caterpillar labelled with the same initial sound – perfect for phonics practice, scissor skills and concentration in EYFS and early Year 1.
What’s included
- Blank caterpillar mats for each single-letter Phase 2 GPC (two mats per page)
- Picture tiles for children to cut out and sort by initial sound

How to set up
- Print the blank caterpillar sheets (two per page).
- Print the picture sheets and cut out the tiles.
- Provide glue sticks and scissors; model safe cutting and sticking.
How to play
- Choose a caterpillar (e.g. s, a, t, p).
- Say the sound together, then name each picture tile.
- Children cut out and stick the tiles that start with the same initial sound onto the caterpillar’s body.
- Repeat with new letters; extend by oral blending or writing the word under the tile.
