Phase 2 tricky words

Use our phase 2 tricky word cards as phase 2 flashcards to help children learn to read tricky words. What are tricky words? Tricky words are words that cannot be completely decoded, or can’t be decoded at all, at the stage of phonics learning the child is at. They need to be learned by sight, as they crop up regularly in reading texts and captions. It’s really important that children learn to read phase 2 phonics tricky words, and quite often, the best way to teach them is by using phase 2 tricky words flashcards. Another great way to learn tricky words is with our phase 2 tricky words rainbow activity, where children simply repeat the writing of each tricky word across a rainbow picture.

Phase 2 activities

You can help children with their phase 2 blending skills using these phase 2 caption cards – simply hold the card up in front of your class and word through blending each phoneme into the next one to form a word. Another way to encourage children to blend, is through phase 2 phonics games, such as this phase 2 caption and word matching activity. Have out in your provision area and encourage children to work in pairs to match the picture with the correct caption.
