The EYFS framework sets out seven areas of learning and development, and one of these is mathematics. The mathematics area of learning is split into two aspects: Numbers and Shape, Space, and Measures.

Numbers

In the numbers aspect of mathematics, children are encouraged to develop an understanding of numbers, counting, and simple calculations. They will be introduced to numbers and counting through a variety of activities, such as counting objects, singing number rhymes, and playing number games.

To support children’s understanding of numbers, practitioners can use a range of resources such as number cards, number lines, and counting objects. They can also use practical activities, such as cooking, to help children understand the concept of number.

Shape, Space, and Measures

In the Shape, Space, and Measures aspect of mathematics, children are encouraged to explore the world around them and develop their understanding of shape, space, and measurement. They will be introduced to concepts such as size, weight, length, and capacity, and encouraged to compare and order objects.

To support children’s understanding of shape, space, and measures, practitioners can use a range of resources such as shape sorters, measuring jugs, and weighing scales. They can also use practical activities, such as building with blocks or exploring the outdoor environment, to help children develop their understanding of these concepts.

Overall, mathematics is an important part of the EYFS curriculum and provides children with the foundation they need to develop their understanding of numbers and shapes, space, and measures. Through practical activities and the use of resources, practitioners can help children develop their mathematical understanding and prepare them for the next stages of their education.
