In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children embark on a fascinating journey of discovery, where they explore fundamental concepts of shape and space. Among these foundational shapes are those with four sides, an essential aspect of early mathematical understanding.

Throughout the EYFS curriculum, children are introduced to four-sided shapes, known as quadrilaterals, in engaging and interactive ways. These shapes, including squares, rectangles, and parallelograms, serve as building blocks for developing spatial awareness and geometric reasoning.

As children interact with various learning materials and activities, they begin to identify and differentiate between these quadrilaterals based on their unique characteristics. For instance, they learn that a square possesses four equal sides and four right angles, while a rectangle has four sides with opposite sides being equal and all interior angles being right angles.

Through hands-on exploration and playful experiences, children not only recognise and name these four-sided shapes but also begin to understand their properties and relationships with other shapes. They may explore how these shapes can be combined and manipulated to create new forms or patterns, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

By incorporating activities that involve sorting, matching, and constructing with four-sided shapes, educators provide children with opportunities to develop spatial reasoning, critical thinking, and mathematical language. These early encounters lay a solid foundation for further mathematical exploration and understanding in later stages of education.

In essence, the introduction to four-sided shapes in the EYFS curriculum is not just about identifying shapes; it’s about nurturing a deeper understanding of geometry and fostering a lifelong appreciation for the beauty and logic of mathematics.
