This unit lays the groundwork for future understanding in number, reasoning and pattern. Through EYFS matching and sorting worksheets, EYFS comparing worksheets and White Rose Reception maths activities, children develop confidence, early mathematical language and a secure understanding of how to organise and compare groups of objects. These lessons are carefully designed to support early years maths sorting and grouping using practical tasks and meaningful language, helping pupils explore quantity, difference and similarity in real contexts.

The activities encourage children to explain their thinking, make decisions about how to sort, and notice relationships between groups. With strong links to the EYFS maths Autumn term curriculum and Early Learning Goals, this block also supports pattern recognition, observation, and the foundations of reasoning that will carry through into later number work in Reception and beyond.
