Year 3 Autumn Block 2: Addition and Subtraction

Autumn Block 2: Addition and Subtraction Within 1000 (Year 3)

Build confidence with Year 3 addition and subtraction within 1000 using this fully resourced maths block, aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 3 National Curriculum. This unit develops pupils’ understanding of mental and written calculation strategies while strengthening place value knowledge.

Pupils begin by using number bonds, place value knowledge and patterns to add and subtract ones, tens and hundreds. They then apply these skills to calculations that cross tens and hundreds boundaries before progressing to formal written methods of column addition and subtraction.

The block also introduces complements to 100, estimation, inverse operations and efficient problem-solving strategies, helping pupils select appropriate methods and explain their mathematical thinking with confidence.

Weeks 4-8 small steps

  • Use number bonds within 10
  • Add and subtract ones, tens and hundreds
  • Use patterns to add and subtract 1s, 10s and 100s
  • Add ones to a 3-digit number (crossing ten)
  • Add tens to a 3-digit number (crossing 100)
  • Subtract ones from a 3-digit number (crossing ten)
  • Subtract tens from a 3-digit number (crossing 100)
  • Use related facts involving ones, tens and hundreds
  • Add two 2-digit and 3-digit numbers without exchange
  • Subtract two 2-digit and 3-digit numbers without exchange
  • Use column addition with exchanging
  • Use column subtraction with exchanging
  • Add and subtract 2-digit and 3-digit numbers
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems
  • Find complements to 100
  • Estimate answers to calculations
