Pupils find complements to 100, estimate answers to calculations, use inverse operations to check their answers and choose efficient methods for solving addition and subtraction problems before completing the end-of-block mini-assessment.

Estimating and checking addition and subtraction

Pupils find complements to 100 before learning to estimate answers to 2-digit and 3-digit calculations using nearby multiples of 10 and 100. They also explore the relationship between addition and subtraction and use inverse operations to check whether their answers are correct.

Choosing efficient methods and solving problems

Pupils consider whether a mental or written method is most appropriate for a calculation and use bar models to support their reasoning when solving problems. The week finishes with a mini-assessment covering the addition and subtraction learning from across the block.
