What is the Phonics Screening Check?

The Phonics Screening Check is a short Year 1 assessment where pupils read a mix of real words and alien words (pseudo-words). It checks whether pupils can use phonics to decode unfamiliar words accurately.

Phonics screening check practice

Regular phonics screening practise helps pupils build confidence and improves decoding fluency. Our phonics screening check practice resources are designed for short, structured sessions that support:

  • quick and accurate blending for real words
  • decoding unfamiliar and alien words using phonics
  • recognising common grapheme patterns in words
  • building speed and confidence through repetition

For a complete assessment option, explore our individual phonics assessment and mock screening test.

Phonics screening check materials and PowerPoints

This collection includes phonics screening check materials such as KS1 word cards, classroom activities and ready-to-teach presentations.

Use our Phonics Screening Check PowerPoint for whole-class practise, and our random word generator PowerPoint for varied daily decoding practice.

Alien word practice activities

Alien words can feel unfamiliar at first, so it’s important that pupils have repeated opportunities to practise decoding them confidently.

Try our alien word maze activity for an engaging way to build pseudo-word decoding fluency.

Games and additional practise

Games provide extra repetition and help pupils build speed and confidence. Our phonics screening check bingo game is ideal for small groups and quick revision sessions.

Support confident decoding in Year 1

Use these phonics screening resources alongside your daily phonics teaching to support pupils who need extra practise and to build whole-class confidence ahead of the check.
