What is taught in Phase 4 phonics?

Phase 4 is a consolidation phase. Unlike Phases 2 and 3, no new graphemes are introduced. Instead, pupils practise applying the graphemes they already know while learning to blend and segment longer words with adjacent consonants.

This includes words with structures such as CCVC (step, clap), CVCC (milk, tent) and CCVCC (stamp, blink). Phase 4 supports reading fluency and spelling accuracy as pupils begin to tackle longer words with confidence.
