Year 2 SPaG Summer Term

Year 2 SPaG scheme – Summer

Spectacular SPaG is an exciting pick up and go SPaG scheme, using small steps, designed to save you time whilst making SPaG engaging and active.

There are 8 lessons in the summer block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.

Each lesson has a PowerPoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet.

The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels : less able and more able. The less challenging resources tend to use simpler vocabulary and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.

The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will be covering in Year 2. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.

Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.

Small steps

The following small steps are covered this term:

✅ Use suffixes to form nouns

Year 2 spelling and grammar lessons play a crucial role in developing pupils’ writing skills and enhancing their understanding of language. These lessons are designed to build a solid foundation, encouraging pupils to express their thoughts clearly and effectively.

In spelling, pupils engage with common exception words that do not follow typical phonetic patterns, helping them to broaden their vocabulary. They also explore phonics through engaging activities that reinforce their understanding of sounds and letter combinations. The introduction of suffixes and prefixes allows pupils to create new words, fostering a sense of creativity in their writing.

Grammar lessons focus on key concepts such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Pupils learn to identify these parts of speech and understand their functions within sentences. This understanding is essential for constructing grammatically correct sentences. Through a variety of interactive activities, pupils practise forming sentences, using conjunctions to join ideas, and exploring different sentence types, such as statements, questions, and exclamations.

These lessons are designed to be fun and engaging, incorporating games, group work, and hands-on activities that encourage collaboration and creativity. Pupils often work on projects that allow them to apply their spelling and grammar knowledge in real-world contexts, reinforcing their learning and making it relevant.

Assessment is also an important aspect of Year 2 spelling and grammar lessons. Teachers use a range of formative assessments to gauge pupils’ progress, providing targeted feedback to help them improve. This continuous assessment ensures that each pupil receives the support they need to succeed.
