Year 2 Summer Spelling Resources

Consolidate and apply spelling knowledge with our Year 2 Summer spelling resources, fully aligned with the National Curriculum and forming part of the Mrs Mactivity SPaG scheme. This spelling strand supports pupils in securing key patterns and applying them accurately as they prepare for Key Stage 2.

Across the term, you will find a complete set of weekly spelling resources for Year 2, including spelling lists, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check sheets, dictation passages, and handwriting sheets in your chosen font. Each week is supported by a clear Spelling Rules PowerPoint to introduce the focus and model correct spelling in context.

These resources are designed to be used together across the week, giving teachers a consistent structure for teaching spelling while allowing flexibility within your timetable. They sit alongside the grammar lessons for the term, helping pupils refine accuracy and use spelling patterns confidently in their writing. See below for a full breakdown of the spelling patterns and rules covered across the Summer term.

What Year 2 covers in Summer

The Year 2 Summer spelling strand focuses on building independence and applying spelling knowledge across a wider range of word types. Pupils revisit earlier patterns and learn how to use suffixes and endings with increasing accuracy. Weekly focuses include:

  • Suffixes: -ment and -ness (movement, happiness)
  • Suffixes: -ful and -less (careful, fearless)
  • Suffix: -ly (quickly, happily)
  • Words ending in le, el, al and il (table, camel, hospital, pencil)
  • ‘er’ sound spelt or and ‘or’ sound spelt ar after w (word, warm, water)
  • ‘u’ sound spelt as o (mother, other, brother)
  • ‘zh’ sound and words ending in tion (television, station, fiction)
  • Homophones and near-homophones (there/their/they’re, sea/see, one/won)
  • Common exception words from the Year 2 spelling appendix

Each week begins with a Spelling Rules PowerPoint to introduce the focus and model correct usage before pupils move into independent practice through handwriting tasks, dictation and spelling application activities.

All resources are written by experienced teachers and support the 2025 DfE Writing Framework’s emphasis on accurate spelling and fluent transcription. Combine with the full SPaG scheme for complete progression from Year 1 to Year 6.
