What is the 2021 updated Letters and Sounds progression?

The Department for Education’s 2021 update to the Letters and Sounds framework builds on the original programme to provide a more structured, step-by-step approach to phonics teaching. Many schools now follow this progression to ensure pupils develop strong early reading skills through consistent, evidence-based instruction. Our phonics games are designed to complement this updated progression, offering targeted practice for each phase.

Engaging phonics games for every phase

Phase 1

Our Phase 1 phonics games focus on developing listening skills, sound discrimination, and phonological awareness through fun sound-matching activities, rhythm games, and alliteration challenges. These games help pupils tune into sounds, an essential skill before blending and segmenting words.

Phase 2

Phase 2 phonics games introduce letter-sound correspondences, supporting early reading with simple blending and segmenting activities. Pupils can practise recognising and using initial sounds, digraphs, and CVC words, reinforcing their understanding of phonics in an enjoyable and interactive way.

Phase 3

Phase 3 phonics games extend knowledge by incorporating more complex sounds, including digraphs and trigraphs. Pupils engage in word-building games, decoding activities, and sound-spotting challenges to deepen their phonics skills.

Phase 4

In Phase 4, our phonics games help consolidate previously learned sounds while introducing adjacent consonants and polysyllabic words. These activities strengthen fluency, preparing pupils for more confident reading.

Phase 5

Phase 5 phonics games take learning to the next level by exploring alternative spellings and pronunciations. Pupils practise decoding longer words, tackling split digraphs, and identifying tricky words in a fun, interactive format.

Teaching tip

For maximum impact, incorporate phonics games into daily sessions. Use them as warm-up activities to reinforce prior learning, small-group tasks for targeted intervention, or independent challenges to build confidence. Encouraging pupils to verbalise their thinking while playing enhances phonological awareness and retention. Repetition is key to success, so revisit games regularly to reinforce learning.
