Year 3 Spring Block 2: Length and Perimeter

Spring Block 2: Length and Perimeter (Year 3)

Develop pupils’ understanding of length and perimeter in Year 3 with this fully resourced maths block, aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 3 National Curriculum. This unit focuses on measuring, comparing and calculating with lengths before applying these skills to perimeter.

Pupils begin by measuring lengths in centimetres, metres and millimetres. They learn to compare measurements, find equivalent lengths and solve problems involving adding and subtracting lengths using different units of measure.

The block then introduces perimeter as the total distance around the outside of a shape. Pupils measure and calculate the perimeter of rectangles, squares and other 2D shapes while applying their understanding of length and measurement.

Week 4 small steps

  • Measure length in centimetres
  • Measure length in metres and centimetres
  • Measure length in millimetres
  • Measure in centimetres and millimetres
  • Compare metres, centimetres and millimetres

Week 5 small steps

  • Find equivalent lengths (m and cm)
  • Find equivalent lengths (cm and mm)
  • Compare lengths
  • Add lengths
  • Subtract lengths

Week 6 small steps

  • Learn about perimeter
  • Measure perimeter
  • Calculate perimeter of rectangles and squares
  • Calculate perimeter of 2D shapes
  • Complete the Length and Perimeter mini-assessment

National Curriculum objectives

  • Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths (m/cm/mm)
  • Measure the perimeter of simple 2D shapes
  • Solve practical problems involving length and perimeter
  • Use standard units of measure accurately

Year 3 Length and Perimeter Worksheets and Lesson Packs

Explore our Year 3 length and perimeter worksheets, lesson packs, teaching slides and planning for Spring Block 2. These resources support pupils in measuring, comparing and calculating with lengths before applying their understanding to perimeter.

Pupils learn to measure accurately using metres, centimetres and millimetres, find equivalent lengths and solve problems involving adding and subtracting measurements. They then develop an understanding of perimeter by measuring and calculating the distance around rectangles, squares and other 2D shapes.

Each lesson supports progression from practical measurement activities towards increasingly efficient calculation methods, with opportunities for reasoning and problem solving throughout the block.

Year 3 Length and Perimeter FAQs

What does Year 3 Spring Block 2 cover?

This block focuses on measuring, comparing and calculating with length before introducing perimeter. Pupils measure using metres, centimetres and millimetres, find equivalent lengths and calculate the perimeter of simple 2D shapes.

Which units of measurement do pupils use in Year 3?

Pupils work with metres (m), centimetres (cm) and millimetres (mm), learning how these units are related and when each should be used.

What is perimeter?

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Pupils learn to measure and calculate perimeter using a range of methods.

Do pupils convert between units of length?

Yes. Pupils learn to find equivalent lengths and convert between metres and centimetres and between centimetres and millimetres.

Are these resources aligned with White Rose Maths?

Yes. These resources follow the White Rose small steps for Year 3 Spring Block 2 and support clear progression across the unit.
