Year 2 Spring Block 4: Fractions

Year 2 fractions – Spring Block 4

Year 2 Maths Spring Block 4 focuses on fractions, helping pupils recognise, find, name and compare fractions of shapes, objects and quantities. Aligned with the Year 2 National Curriculum and White Rose Maths progression, pupils explore halves, quarters and thirds before moving on to unit and non-unit fractions and simple equivalence.

Across the block, pupils make equal parts, find fractions of quantities, recognise that two quarters are equivalent to one half and count in fractions. Practical activities and visual models help pupils understand fractions as equal parts of a whole and apply this knowledge to problem-solving.

Year 2 fractions resources

Our Year 2 fractions resources help pupils recognise, find and name halves, quarters and thirds of shapes, objects and quantities. Pupils develop their understanding of equal parts before exploring unit fractions, non-unit fractions and simple fraction equivalence.

Year 2 fractions worksheets and activities

The block includes Year 2 fractions worksheets, teaching slides and practical activities for finding halves, quarters and thirds, exploring fractions of amounts, recognising unit and non-unit fractions and finding three quarters. Pupils also recognise the equivalence of two quarters and one half and apply their understanding to fraction problems.

Teaching halves, quarters and thirds in Year 2

In Year 2, pupils learn to recognise, find, name and write fractions including 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity. They also learn to write simple fractions and recognise that 2/4 is equivalent to 1/2, building the foundations for later work with equivalent fractions.
