Year 2 Spring Block 4: Fractions

Spring Block 4: Fractions (Year 2)

Develop fraction understanding with this Year 2 fractions block, aligned with the White Rose small steps and mapped to the Year 2 National Curriculum. This unit helps pupils recognise, find, name and compare fractions through practical activities, visual models and real-life contexts.

Pupils begin by exploring parts and wholes before learning to recognise and find halves, quarters and thirds of shapes, sets of objects and quantities. They then develop understanding of unit and non-unit fractions, simple equivalence and counting in fractions, helping to build strong foundations for future fraction learning.

Week 10 small steps

  • Parts and wholes
  • Make equal parts
  • Recognise a half
  • Find a half
  • Recognise a quarter

Week 11 small steps

  • Find a quarter
  • Recognise a third
  • Find a third
  • Unit fractions
  • Non-unit fractions

Week 12 small steps

  • Recognise equivalence of a half and two quarters
  • Find three quarters
  • Count in fractions
  • Solve problems with fractions

National Curriculum objectives

  • Recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity
  • Write simple fractions and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2

Developing fraction understanding in Year 2

This Year 2 fractions block helps pupils develop secure understanding of fractions through practical exploration, visual representations and mathematical discussion. The lessons support pupils as they recognise fractions as equal parts of a whole and apply this understanding to shapes, objects and quantities.

Pupils learn to identify and find halves, quarters and thirds, explore unit and non-unit fractions, recognise simple equivalence and solve fraction problems. Through structured activities and reasoning opportunities, pupils develop confidence with fractions and build foundations for more advanced work in Key Stage 2.
