Year 4 Exploring Area Activity Cards
These Year 4 exploring area activity cards introduce pupils to the concept of area through practical, hands-on tasks. Pupils use sticky notes as informal units to explore and compare the area of everyday classroom objects, such as tables, books, whiteboards and doors, helping them understand area as the amount of surface covered.
The activity cards encourage pupils to estimate, cover surfaces carefully and discuss why accurate coverage without gaps or overlaps is important when finding area. Tasks also include making shapes with a given area using a set number of sticky notes, allowing pupils to explore how shapes can vary while still having the same total area.
These activity cards are designed to promote discussion, reasoning and collaborative work, making them ideal for guided groups, paired activities or as an introductory session at the start of an area unit. They support pupils in developing a secure conceptual understanding of area before moving on to working with grids and formal methods.
