Year 4 | Decimals Knowledge Organiser – Comparing and Partitioning

This Year 4 decimals knowledge organiser supports pupils in developing secure understanding of partitioning, comparing and ordering decimal numbers. It brings together place value, visual models and worked examples to help pupils reason about decimal size and structure with confidence.

The organiser models partitioning decimals into ones, tenths and hundredths, including flexible partitioning of the same number in different ways. Pupils also see how tenths and hundredths can be combined to make a whole, how decimals are compared using place value columns, and how numbers can be ordered in ascending and descending order.

Clear examples also show rounding decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number and linking fractions and decimals through equivalent representations, including halves, quarters and three quarters.

What’s included in this knowledge organiser?

  • Partitioning decimals into ones, tenths and hundredths
  • Flexible partitioning of the same decimal number
  • Making a whole using tenths and hundredths
  • Comparing decimals using place value columns
  • Ordering decimals in ascending and descending order
  • Rounding decimals with one decimal place using number lines
