Direct speech lesson Year 3
This direct speech lesson Year 3 resource introduces children to inverted commas and how they’re used to show spoken words in writing. It’s the first step in teaching direct speech at lower KS2 and builds the foundation for later punctuation and dialogue work.
The pack includes the Identify direct speech and inverted commas PowerPoint, the Identifying direct speech activity sheet, and a differentiated worksheet titled Identifying direct speech and inverted commas. Children learn how to recognise speech marks, spot what’s being said, and highlight punctuation in context. There’s also a sorting task and simple writing activities using speech bubbles.
There are no age-specific designs in the materials, making this pack suitable for a range of learners. It works well in mixed-ability classrooms where the focus is on grammar and punctuation, not appearance.
This Year 3 SPaG lesson ties directly into the wider scheme and supports children as they move from recognising sentence features to using them independently in writing.
