Year 3 Autumn lesson plans and rationale
Plan and teach the Autumn term with our Year 3 Autumn lesson plans and rationale, designed to accompany the Year 3 Autumn SPaG scheme. This planning document explains the rationale behind each lesson, the order in which objectives are taught and how the small-step sequence supports pupils’ transition from Year 2 into Lower Key Stage 2.
The Autumn block contains 9 carefully sequenced SPaG lessons, each mapped to the National Curriculum English Appendix 2 objectives. Every lesson includes a Year 3 SPaG PowerPoint, practical activity and differentiated worksheet, with teaching guidance and suggestions for additional practice and continuous provision where appropriate. :
Autumn lesson sequence
- Identify nouns, adjectives and noun phrases (Year 2 recap)
- Identify consonants and vowels
- Use a or an correctly in a sentence
- Use prepositions to express place and position
- Identify and use conjunctions to express time and cause
- Identify present and past tense verbs (Year 2 recap)
- Recognise the present perfect form of verbs
- Identify and use adverbs to express place and time
- Identify direct speech and inverted commas
The lesson plans explain the teaching sequence for each objective, key vocabulary, curriculum links, suggested activities and resource requirements, making it straightforward to deliver consistent SPaG lessons throughout the Autumn term. Vocabulary has been carefully selected to match pupils’ prior spelling knowledge so they can focus on learning new grammar concepts.
