There are 6 lessons in the Summer block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.
Each lesson has a PowerPoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet.
The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels: less able and more able. The less challenging resources tend to use simpler vocabulary and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.
Each lesson plan also includes ideas for additional or continuous provision activities.
The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will be covering in Year 6. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.
Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.
Each session lasts 15 – 30 minutes depending on the age of the children and the complexity of the skills/knowledge being taught. The lessons are designed to be stand-alone though could be incorporated as part of the main English lesson.
The following small steps are covered this term:
✅ Explore and use hyphens to avoid ambiguity
✅ Identify and use the future perfect tense
✅ Use the passive in written sentences
✅ Recognise and use headings and sub-headings • Recognise and use columns and tables to structure text
✅ Use a range of devices to build cohesion
*The rest of this term is for revising previously taught concepts and applying these concepts in independent writing tasks as part of the wider English curriculum.
Our Year 6 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) scheme for the Summer Term focuses on consolidating key grammar skills while introducing new techniques to refine writing further. Aligned with the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation, this structured scheme helps pupils prepare for the transition to secondary school by ensuring they can apply grammar concepts confidently in independent writing.
This term, pupils will explore how to use hyphens to avoid ambiguity, refine their understanding of the passive voice, and apply the future perfect tense accurately. Additionally, lessons will cover how to structure writing effectively using headings, sub-headings, columns, and tables, while reinforcing cohesive devices to improve text flow.
The Year 6 SPaG Summer Term scheme covers the following small steps:
The remainder of this term focuses on revising and applying previously taught grammar concepts through independent writing tasks. This ensures that pupils have a firm grasp of key grammar techniques and can use them effectively in extended writing.
The Year 6 SPaG scheme for the Summer Term helps pupils refine their writing by introducing organisational tools such as columns, tables, and sub-headings. These elements improve text structure and presentation, ensuring clarity for different audiences and purposes.
A strong emphasis is placed on sentence-level accuracy, with lessons covering the future perfect tense and passive voice to help pupils write more formally. Cohesive devices such as conjunctions, pronouns, and repetition are also revisited to ensure pupils can link ideas fluently.
Our SPaG scheme for Year 6 is designed to help teachers deliver structured, engaging lessons that reinforce essential grammar skills. This final term focuses on consolidation and application, allowing pupils to demonstrate their understanding through independent writing.
Key benefits of our Year 6 SPaG Summer Term scheme include:
By the end of Year 6, pupils should confidently use a range of cohesive devices, different verb tenses (including the future perfect), and punctuation for clarity. They should also be able to structure writing effectively using headings, sub-headings, and tables.
Encouraging pupils to use pronouns, repetition, and conjunctions to link ideas across paragraphs helps build cohesion. Model texts and peer review activities can also support understanding.
Teaching hyphens should involve identifying ambiguous phrases where hyphens clarify meaning (e.g., “man eating shark” vs. “man-eating shark”). Interactive activities and sentence transformations can help pupils apply this rule in context.
