Year 6 SPaG Summer Term

Year 6 SPaG scheme and resources – Summer

There are 6 lessons in the Summer block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.

Each lesson has a PowerPoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet.

The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels: less able and more able. The less challenging resources tend to use simpler vocabulary and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.

Each lesson plan also includes ideas for additional or continuous provision activities.

The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will be covering in Year 6. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.

Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.

Small steps

The following small steps are covered this term:

✅ Explore and use hyphens to avoid ambiguity
✅ Identify and use the future perfect tense
✅ Use the passive in written sentences
✅ Recognise and use headings and sub-headings • Recognise and use columns and tables to structure text
✅ Use a range of devices to build cohesion

*The rest of this term is for revising previously taught concepts and applying these concepts in independent writing tasks as part of the wider English curriculum.

In Year 6, pupils are expected to build on their spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) skills as outlined in the National Curriculum. Key areas of focus include:

1. Spelling: Pupils should be able to spell a wide range of words, including those with complex prefixes and suffixes. They learn to apply spelling rules consistently and are encouraged to use dictionaries and thesauruses to support their writing.

2. Punctuation: Children are expected to use a variety of punctuation marks accurately, including commas for clarity, apostrophes for possession and contractions, and inverted commas for direct speech. They should also be able to use colons, semicolons, dashes, and brackets to add clarity and emphasis to their writing.

3. Grammar: Year 6 pupils should demonstrate a clear understanding of advanced grammatical concepts, including:
– Relative clauses and their function
– Active and passive voice
– Modal verbs to express degrees of possibility
– The use of adverbials and expanded noun phrases to add detail and enhance writing

4. Vocabulary Development: Pupils should be encouraged to use a rich and varied vocabulary, incorporating sophisticated language in their writing. They should also learn to choose words purposefully to convey precise meaning and engage their readers.

These expectations help Year 6 pupils solidify their SPaG skills, preparing them for secondary education and further literacy development.
