Our Autumn Block 3: Area resources provide a structured and engaging approach to developing pupils’ understanding of area. Pupils will learn to measure area using a simple yet effective method—counting squares. Through practical activities, visual representations, and problem-solving opportunities, they will build a strong foundation in spatial awareness and mathematical reasoning.

What’s covered in this block?

Over one week, pupils will develop their understanding of area through a series of carefully planned lessons. They will:

• Understand what area means and how it differs from perimeter
• Measure area by counting squares
• Create different shapes with the same area
• Compare areas of different shapes

Autumn Block 3 Year 4: Area

Pupils begin by developing a clear understanding of what area represents. They will explore how area is used in real-world contexts and how it differs from perimeter. This foundational knowledge helps pupils see why measuring area is useful.

Next, they will learn to measure area using the simple method of counting squares. By working with grids and squared paper, pupils will develop confidence in recognising and comparing different areas.

Once they have mastered counting squares, pupils will be challenged to create their own shapes with given areas. This encourages flexible thinking and a deeper understanding of how area can be represented in different ways.

Finally, pupils will compare areas, helping them to develop reasoning skills and a greater understanding of spatial relationships.

Why this block is important

A solid understanding of area is essential for many aspects of maths, including geometry and measurement. By the end of this block, pupils will:

• Be able to accurately measure and compare areas
• Understand how area relates to real-life situations, such as floor space or land measurement
• Develop problem-solving skills by exploring different ways to represent the same area

Supporting pupils’ progress

These resources provide clear explanations, step-by-step activities, and engaging challenges to support all abilities. Pupils will be encouraged to think critically, explore mathematical concepts in a hands-on way, and apply their knowledge in different contexts.

This block also includes access to a free Year 4 maths yearly overview and valuable maths subject leader resources to support planning and assessment.
