By the end of year 3, according the national curriculum, children should be able to:

  • count up and down in tenths; recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10
  • recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
  • recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
  • recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators
  • add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole [for example, 5/7 + 1/7 = 6/7 ]
  • compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominators
  • solve problems that involve all of the above
In year 3, children are introduced to the fundamental concept of fractions, which is a crucial part of maths. Fractions are a way of representing parts of a whole, and they play a significant role in many real-life situations, from cooking to measuring ingredients to dividing up a pizza.During year 3, children will start by learning the basics of fractions, including how to recognize and name different fractions such as halves, thirds, and quarters. They will learn to count in fractions and understand the relationship between fractions and whole numbers.

As they progress, year 3 children will move on to more complex concepts such as equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. They will learn how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and how to identify and use improper fractions and mixed numbers.

To help them develop a deeper understanding of fractions, Year 3 children will be encouraged to use visual aids such as bar models, which can help them to see the relationship between different fractions.
