Year 1 Maths Autumn Block 2

Year 1 addition and subtraction worksheets, year 1 addition and subtraction lesson PowerPoints, Year 1 maths mastery addition and subtraction resources

The year 1 maths national curriculum states that:

  • read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (−) and equals (=) signs
  • represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
  • add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0
  • solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? − 9

This may seem complicated, but actually this relates to fairly simple maths problems, and can be easily translated into child-friendly language with our year 1 addition and subtraction maths resources.

Teaching addition and subtraction to year 1 is the baseline for all maths. Without addition and subtraction techniques, children will struggle to progress onto more complex areas of maths such as multiplication and division.  One of the first things to introduce to children, is the concept of number bonds.

What are number bonds?

Simply put, number bonds are pairs of numbers that when added together, make another number. Usually we talk about things like number bonds to 10, and number bonds to 20. With number bonds to 10, we are looking for all of the pairs of numbers that when added together, make 10. For example, 5 + 5, 3 + 7. These are useful as they quickly allow children to add fluently, using their knowledge of what numbers go together. This knowledge also helps children figure out number bonds to 20, since if 3 + 7 = 10, then then can also infer that 13 + 7 = 20. This also helps with figuring out number bonds to 100, since we can also say that 30 + 70 = 100. This is great for rapid recall and mental maths, and really speeds up children’s ability to answer questions, and ultimately, will help them in real life settings. We have lots of resources to help with number bonds in year 1, including this using a system to find number bonds lesson presentation.

Year 1 addition and subtraction resources

With our maths mastery resources for year 1, we have broken the resource down into small steps, to better help you deliver the learning to children in an easy to digest, manageable way.

Year 1 fact families resources

Fact families are a really easy way for children to be able to relate addition to subtraction, and use related facts to help speed up their recall. What is a fact family? Simply put, a fact family consists of a mixture of 4 additions and subtractions that are interrelated. An example is:

3 + 7 = 10

7 + 3 = 10

10 – 7 = 3

10 – 3 = 7

With this, if children know one of these number facts, then they can quickly figure out the rest – thus speeding up recall. We have a really handy year 1 fact families lesson presentation to help explain this clearly to children.
