Reception Maths Spring Block 4

Reception Maths – Spring Block 4: Length, Height and Time

Spring Block 4 supports key measurement skills in Reception, including exploring length, height and early concepts of time. These maths activities for EYFS pupils use direct comparison and sequencing to build vocabulary and understanding.

About this block

This unit in our EYFS maths scheme of work focuses on exploring and comparing length, height and time using real-life objects and purposeful experiences. It builds children’s understanding of measurement in meaningful contexts, following the White Rose EYFS Spring planning.

Week 6 covers measurement vocabulary such as long, short, tall and short. Pupils compare length and height by lining up objects, using cubes, and exploring body-based measurements like hands and feet.

Week 7 introduces early time concepts. Children talk about time, order familiar events, and sequence daily routines to develop temporal understanding.

Each Reception lesson includes:

  • Easy-to-follow EYFS maths lesson plans
  • Engaging Reception measurement PowerPoints
  • Optional EYFS measurement worksheets for length, height and time
  • Ideas for continuous provision and practical activities

Designed for progressive teaching across the term, this block follows Spring Block 3: 6, 7 and 8 and helps prepare pupils for deeper problem-solving and reasoning in the summer term.

Reception Maths – Spring Block 4: Length, Height and Time

Spring Block 4: Length, Height and Time introduces Reception pupils to measurement through engaging, hands-on maths activities. Children explore key concepts such as length, height and time using real-life objects, visual prompts and purposeful comparison. This block is part of our full EYFS maths scheme of work and is aligned with the White Rose EYFS Spring small steps.

Week 6 – Exploring length and height

  • Explore length – Pupils compare objects such as ribbons, pencils and books to identify what is long or short, building awareness through physical exploration.
  • Compare length – Children use mathematical vocabulary like longer, shorter and the same to describe and compare two or more objects.
  • Explore height – Pupils observe and compare the height of different objects and people, using terms such as tall and short.
  • Compare height – Children apply their understanding to describe height differences with accuracy, reinforcing the concept with visual and tactile resources.

Week 7 – Introduction to time

  • Talk about time – Pupils begin using time-based vocabulary such as before, after, morning and night to describe and sequence events.
  • Order and sequence time – Children arrange familiar daily routines in order and use language like first, next and last to talk about their day.

Why this unit is important

Understanding and comparing length, height and time helps Reception pupils develop essential measurement vocabulary and reasoning skills. These EYFS maths lessons support the Early Learning Goals by building descriptive language, comparative thinking and practical knowledge of the world around them.

Each lesson in this block includes:

  • Detailed EYFS maths lesson plans
  • Interactive Reception measurement PowerPoints
  • Optional EYFS measurement worksheets for length, height and time
  • Continuous provision suggestions and hands-on activity ideas

Use this unit alongside Spring Block 3: 6, 7 and 8 or move on to future EYFS maths blocks for consistent and progressive teaching throughout the Reception year.
