In the Early Years Foundation Stage  there is a focus on promoting overall health and well-being, including oral health. The EYFS framework provides guidance for early years practitioners on what children should learn and experience in their early years education. Areas covered include:

1. **Basic Oral Hygiene Habits:**
– Encouraging children to brush their teeth regularly, ideally twice a day.
– Teaching them how to use a toothbrush and toothpaste appropriately.

2. **Healthy Eating Habits:**
– Emphasising the importance of a balanced diet for overall health, including dental health.
– Identifying and understanding foods that are good for teeth and those that may contribute to dental problems.

3. **Sugar Awareness:**
– Raising awareness about the impact of sugary foods and drinks on oral health.
– Encouraging moderation in consuming sugary treats and beverages.

4. **Regular Dental Check-ups:**
– Highlighting the importance of regular dental check-ups and visits to the dentist.
– Familiarising children with the dental care process and alleviating any fears they may have about visiting the dentist.

5. **Oral Health Discussions:**
– Engaging in discussions about the importance of oral health with children.
– Encouraging them to ask questions and express any concerns they may have about their teeth.

6. **Practical Activities:**
– Incorporating practical activities that promote oral health, such as role-playing dental visits or demonstrating proper teeth brushing techniques.

7. **Use of Educational Resources:**
– Utilizing age-appropriate books, videos, and other resources that educate children about oral health in a fun and engaging manner.

8. **Parental Involvement:**
– Involving parents in promoting good oral health practices at home.
– Providing information to parents on how they can support their children’s oral health.

It’s important for early years practitioners to tailor their approaches based on the specific age group and individual needs of the children in their care. Promoting positive oral health habits from a young age helps set the foundation for a lifetime of good dental hygiene.
