Year 4 Place Value Lesson Plan – Autumn Block 1 Week 2
This Year 4 place value lesson plan outlines the teaching sequence for Autumn Block 1, Week 2 of the Maths Masters scheme. The focus moves from three-digit numbers into secure work with four-digit numbers, building pupils’ understanding of place value within 10,000.
Across the week, the plan covers representing numbers within 10,000 using base ten, place value charts and Gattegno charts, partitioning numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, and exploring flexible partitioning through exchanging. Pupils also develop fluency in finding 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 more or less, including calculations that cross boundaries.
Each lesson includes a mental starter, main teacher input, guided and independent activities, and assessment questions to support ongoing checking of understanding. Common misconceptions are highlighted throughout, including the use of zero as a placeholder and the importance of understanding the value of each digit.
