KS1 SPaG scheme of work
Use ‘and’ to join words in sentences worksheets help children start extending their writing with simple coordinating conjunctions. In Lesson 8 of our Year 1 SPaG scheme, pupils learn how the word ‘and’ can be used to join words and phrases, making sentences longer and more meaningful.
This KS1 SPaG lesson introduces ‘and’ as a joining word, supporting children to identify where it fits in a sentence and how it links two related ideas. With video prompts, matching games and sentence writing practice, the lesson helps build both grammar and vocabulary confidence.
The pack includes:
- Interactive SPaG presentation with real-life examples of ‘and’ in action
- Matching activity – join sentence parts using ‘and’
- Two differentiated SPaG worksheets using ‘and’ to join words in sentences
This lesson links to the National Curriculum statement: join words and clauses using ‘and’ and follows the structure set out in the DfE’s English Appendix 2. Simpler worksheets provide extra sentence scaffolds and earlier-phase vocabulary to support developing writers.
These Year 1 grammar worksheets give children structured practice using ‘and’ in writing, and are ideal for short grammar inputs, sentence extension work or writing interventions.
