SPaG Scheme Year 1 Spring Lesson 5: Use Capital Letters for Names of People, Places and Days of the Week

Use capital letters for names worksheets

This Year 1 SPaG lesson introduces pupils to the rule that names of people, places and days of the week start with a capital letter. Children explore how capital letters are used for proper nouns and practise spotting and correcting sentences that are missing them.

The lesson supports one of the National Curriculum expectations for Year 1: Capital letters for names of people, places, the days of the week, and the personal pronoun ‘I’.

The pack includes:

  • Interactive SPaG presentation with clear modelling of capital letters
  • Hands-on capital letters for names activity sheet
  • Two differentiated Use Capital Letters for Names Worksheets for varied levels of support

All vocabulary is aligned with Phonics Phases 2–4 to ensure accessibility. Each worksheet clearly states the small step, making progress easy to track. Resources are unlabelled by year group, so they can be used flexibly across classes or for revision.
