KS1 SPaG scheme of work
Spectacular SPaG gives you a simple and engaging KS1 SPaG scheme of work for Year 2, built around clear small steps to make grammar, punctuation and spelling easy to teach. The scheme is designed to save time while keeping lessons active, practical and accessible for younger pupils.
The SPaG Scheme Year 2 Long Term Progression Overview shows how skills build across the year and helps you plan your timetable with confidence. It provides a clear Year 2 SPaG long-term plan so you can see exactly how the small steps link together across the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.
The scheme is organised into three termly blocks, each containing around 10 lessons. Every lesson focuses on one small step from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation, giving you a reliable structure for introducing the Year 2 grammar curriculum.
Each lesson includes a PowerPoint presentation, a practical activity sheet and a differentiated worksheet. Activity sheets help children explore the concept in a hands-on way, while worksheets support written application. All resources are differentiated at two levels, with the simpler versions using vocabulary from phonics Phases 4 and 5 along with visual prompts and gentle scaffolding.
Lesson plans also include ideas for extra activities or continuous provision, giving you flexibility across the week. All lesson plans for the term are provided in a single download at the top of each block’s page to make Year 2 SPaG planning straightforward.
The vocabulary used across the lessons aligns with Phase 4 and Phase 5 phonics, helping children apply familiar words while learning new grammar and punctuation concepts without overload.
You can teach each lesson as a 15–30 minute standalone session or break it into shorter chunks depending on your class and timetable. This approach works well for KS1 routines and supports confident early SPaG teaching.
