KS1 SPaG scheme of work
Year 1 SPaG worksheets help children practise key grammar skills in small, manageable steps. In Lesson 4: Use Capital Letters to Mark the Start of a Sentence, children learn that every sentence begins with a capital letter – and how to correct sentences that don’t follow this rule.
This KS1 SPaG lesson focuses on sentence punctuation and reinforces earlier learning about capital letters. Children explore examples of correct and incorrect sentences, and practise spotting and correcting missing capitals at the beginning of sentences.
The pack includes:
- Interactive SPaG teaching presentation on capital letters at sentence beginnings
- Sorting sentences activity – identify which ones start with a capital
- Two differentiated SPaG worksheets for Year 1 sentence punctuation
This lesson supports the National Curriculum objective: introduction to capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences, as outlined in the DfE’s English Appendix 2. Differentiated worksheet options make it suitable for both independent writers and those needing extra support.
These Year 1 SPaG worksheets help children build sentence-level accuracy while improving reading fluency and writing confidence. They’re ideal for whole-class teaching, small groups or interventions.

Each worksheet shows the small step it covers and is free of year group labels, so it can be used flexibly across KS1 or for catch-up teaching.
