KS1 SPaG scheme of work
Spectacular SPaG is a pick-up-and-go scheme designed to save you time while making SPaG active, engaging and easy to teach. SPaG Scheme Year 1 Autumn Lesson 1: Write a Given Sentence is the first lesson of the Autumn term and introduces children to the idea that words can be combined to make a sentence.
This KS1 SPaG lesson focuses on building early sentence writing confidence through oral rehearsal and teacher-led modelling. Children are guided to listen to a sentence, say it out loud, and write it independently – supporting both grammar and early phonics skills.
The pack includes:
- Interactive SPaG presentation to model sentence construction
- Hands-on write a sentence activity sheet with picture cards
- Two differentiated Year 1 SPaG worksheets to support all levels of ability
Vocabulary is drawn from Phonics Phases 2–4 to support decoding. The simpler worksheet version includes a word bank and extra scaffolding for children who are still developing independence.
This SPaG worksheet pack is fully aligned with the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation and covers the National Curriculum statement: write from memory simple sentences dictated by the teacher that include words using the GPCs and common exception words taught so far.
The Year 1 SPaG Autumn lesson plans are also available for extra guidance and include suggestions for continuous provision activities. You can find the full KS1 SPaG scheme of work here too.
To help with planning and progression, each worksheet clearly shows the small step it covers. No year group labels are shown, so the resources can be used flexibly across ages or for SEND support.
