Phonics Winter and Christmas resources

This Santa’s Sleigh Phonics Activity is very similar to our Supermarket Sweep game from our Phonics Family range, and is a great way to encourage children to blend and read in the run up to Christmas – based on both phase 2 and phase 3 words. You can of course, choose the words that are the most appropriate for your class – or just write your own.

How to prepare the game:

  • Print out the sleigh and the images. Then ask the children to make their way through Santa’s list finding the correct images to put in his sleigh.OR
  • You could place the sleigh in a zip lock bag and then you could get any Christmas magazine you have lying around and ask the children to cut out images from the magazine.

How to play Santa’s Sleigh:

  • Give children Santa’s list and the images provided.
  • Ask them to cut the images out.
  • Ask children to read the words on their list and find the corresponding picture of the item.
  • Put or stick the item in the sleigh.

Challenge – ask children to check each other’s sleighs to see if they have the correct items. Children can also draw their own items and challenge one another to write the correct words on a list of their own.
