Phonics Winter and Christmas resources

This Santa’s Sleigh Phonics Activity is similar to our Supermarket Sweep game from the Phonics Family range, and is an engaging way to support blending and early reading in the run up to Christmas. It includes words from Phase 2 and Phase 3, though you can swap in anything that suits your class.

How to prepare the game:

  • Print the sleigh and the picture cards. Ask the children to work through Santa’s list and find the matching items to place in his sleigh.
  • Or place the sleigh sheet in a zip-lock bag and use a Christmas magazine. The children can cut out pictures and match them to the words on Santa’s list.

How to play Santa’s Sleigh:

  • Give each child Santa’s list and the picture cards.
  • Ask them to cut out the pictures.
  • They read each word on the list and find the matching image.
  • They place or stick each item into the sleigh.

Challenge: Ask the children to check each other’s sleighs to see if the items match the words. They can also draw their own items and challenge a partner to write a list to match.
