Oral blending and segmenting activities for Phase 1 phonics in Nursery and Reception.
Rhyme Town Week 8: Oral blending and segmenting
Based on 5 Little Ducks and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Rhyme Town Week 8 focuses on oral blending and segmenting (Phase 1 phonics) for Nursery and Reception. Pupils practise hearing the sounds in simple words, segmenting them into phonemes, and blending sounds together to say the word. The riverbank theme works brilliantly for active learning, with practical games that help pupils connect sounds to meaning.
What’s included in Week 8?
This pack includes five pre-reading phonics lessons and five pre-writing mark making activities, alongside a detailed lesson plan, an interactive presentation and ready-to-use resources. The pre-reading lessons build blending and segmenting skills using ducks, fish and splash activities, while the pre-writing activities develop writing readiness through mark making using a triangle shape.
- Duck talk segmenting activity (duck quacks for each phoneme)
- Splash segmenting activity (move a duck onto each splash for each sound)
- Move the ducks phoneme frame activity (one duck in each box for each sound)
- Move the fish phoneme frame activity (segment and blend fish-themed words)
- Gross motor splash segmenting outside using chalk puddles
- Crayon hills triangle mark making activity
- Duck beaks and fish tails triangle drawing activities
- Sensory writing bags for triangle formation
- Duck finger puppet craft linked to the rhyme
The blending and segmenting games can be repeated across the week as quick warm-ups, and the pre-writing activities work well as adult-led tasks or set up for child-led practice in your Early Years learning environment.
