Greater than less than dice activity
This greater than less than dice activity is a fun and engaging way for Year 1 pupils to practise comparing numbers and using inequality symbols. Aligned with the White Rose small steps and the National Curriculum, this resource helps children build fluency with mathematical language and symbols such as greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=).
Pupils roll two dice, record the numbers, and decide which is greater or less using the correct symbol. This hands-on approach helps make abstract concepts more meaningful and supports mathematical talk and reasoning. It also encourages repeated practice in a playful, low-pressure format.
The activity includes a clear recording sheet that supports independent working and can be used in pairs, small groups or whole-class sessions. Ideal for a maths lesson starter, continuous provision, or as part of a fluency station in Year 1 classrooms.
This task also supports number recognition, counting, and numerical order – key building blocks for secure place value understanding.
Part of our full collection of Year 1 maths worksheets, fully aligned with the White Rose small steps and designed to build number confidence and reasoning skills.
