Reception Maths Spring Week 11: 3D Shapes
Reception Maths – Spring Week 11: 3D Shape Activities
This week in our Reception maths scheme, pupils explore 3D shapes through a range of practical, engaging tasks. Children learn to name and describe common 3D shapes including cubes, cuboids, spheres, cones, cylinders and pyramids, while comparing them to familiar 2D shapes found in the environment.
Through hands-on EYFS 3D shape activities, pupils investigate shape properties using everyday items. They explore key vocabulary such as flat, curved, edge, face, and roll as they sort and group shapes based on how they look and feel. Using a feely bag and physical models, children match shapes to real-life objects and practise describing them using their own words.
This week also includes:
- Interactive teaching slides for introducing and exploring 3D shape names and properties
- Adult-led Reception 3D shape activities with sorting, matching and building tasks
- Reception 3D shape worksheets that support discussion and classification
- Shape hunt activities and continuous provision ideas for independent learning
These EYFS geometry activities help children build spatial awareness and confidence in using mathematical language to describe the world around them. Aligned with White Rose small steps and the EYFS Framework, this unit provides a solid foundation for future shape and space learning.
