Year 4 SPaG Summer Term

Year 4 SPaG scheme and resources – Summer

There are 9 lessons in the Summer block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.

Each lesson has a PowerPoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet.

The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels: less able and more able. The less challenging resources tend to use simpler vocabulary and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.

Each lesson plan also includes ideas for additional or continuous provision activities.

The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will be covering in Year 4. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.

Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.

Small steps

The following small steps are covered this term:

✅ Use apostrophes to mark plural possession
✅ Use possessive pronouns within sentences
✅ Select appropriate pronouns and nouns within and across sentence
✅ Use all punctuation in direct speech.
✅ Use and punctuate fronted adverbials for when and where
✅ Use paragraphs to organise ideas
✅ Spell and use adverbs using the suffix –ly
✅ Spell and use adjectives using the suffix –ous
✅ Spell and use nouns using the suffix –ation

In Year 4, pupils continue to build on their spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) skills as outlined in the National Curriculum. Key areas of focus include:

1. Spelling: Pupils learn more complex spelling patterns, including the use of prefixes and suffixes, and are introduced to words with silent letters. They also explore the rules for adding plural forms and different verb endings.

2. Punctuation: Children expand their use of punctuation marks, including commas for lists, apostrophes for possession and contractions, and inverted commas for direct speech. They learn how to use punctuation to clarify meaning and enhance their writing.

3. Grammar: Pupils study different sentence structures, including simple, compound, and complex sentences. They learn about noun phrases, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions, focusing on how these elements work together to create meaning.

4. Vocabulary Development: Year 4 encourages pupils to broaden their vocabulary, using a range of descriptive and expressive language in their writing.

Through engaging activities and exercises, Year 4 pupils develop essential SPaG skills that support their overall literacy development and prepare them for more advanced concepts in the future.
