Year 4 Summer Spelling Resources

Consolidate and apply spelling knowledge with our Year 4 Summer spelling resources, fully aligned with the National Curriculum and forming part of the Mrs Mactivity SPaG scheme. This spelling strand supports pupils in securing key patterns and applying them accurately as they prepare for Year 5.

Across the term, you will find a complete set of weekly spelling resources for Year 4, including spelling lists, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check sheets, dictation passages, and handwriting sheets in your chosen font. Each week is supported by a clear Spelling Rules PowerPoint to introduce the focus and model correct spelling in context.

These resources are designed to be used together across the week, giving teachers a consistent structure for teaching spelling while allowing flexibility within your timetable. They sit alongside the grammar lessons for the term, helping pupils refine accuracy and use spelling patterns confidently in their writing. See below for a full breakdown of the spelling patterns and rules covered across the Summer term.

What Year 4 covers in Summer

The Year 4 Summer spelling strand consolidates key suffixes and introduces more challenging patterns and statutory words. Weekly focuses include:

  • Words with sc (science, scent, scissors, descend)
  • Homophones (accept/except, affect/effect, whose/who’s, weather/whether)
  • ‘ei’ and ‘ey’ patterns (eight, weight, neighbour, survey, they)
  • gu words (guitar, guard, guess, guest, guilt)
  • Suffix -ly (greedily, sleepily, nobly, wholly)
  • Suffix -ous (dangerous, jealous, famous, various, curious)
  • Suffix -ation (information, preparation, admiration, relaxation)
  • Statutory words from the Year 3 and 4 list (consider, continue, experiment, separate)

Each week begins with a Spelling Rules PowerPoint to introduce the focus and model correct usage before pupils move into independent practice through handwriting tasks, dictation and spelling application activities.

All resources are written by experienced teachers and support the 2025 DfE Writing Framework’s emphasis on accurate spelling and fluent transcription. Explore the full SPaG scheme for complete coverage from Year 1 to Year 6.
