Year 3 Spring Spelling Resources

Build accuracy and confidence with our Year 3 Spring spelling resources, fully aligned with the National Curriculum and forming part of the Mrs Mactivity SPaG scheme. This spelling strand supports pupils as they begin to apply spelling rules more independently across a wider range of words and patterns.

Across the term, you will find a complete set of weekly spelling resources for Year 3, including spelling lists, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check sheets, dictation passages, and handwriting sheets in your chosen font. Each week is supported by a clear Spelling Rules PowerPoint to introduce the focus, model examples, and guide whole-class teaching.

These resources are designed to be used together across the week, giving teachers a consistent structure for teaching spelling while allowing flexibility within your timetable. They sit alongside the grammar lessons for the term, helping pupils improve accuracy and apply spelling patterns confidently in their writing. See below for a full breakdown of the spelling patterns and rules covered across the Spring term.

What Year 3 covers in Spring

The Year 3 Spring spelling strand introduces common prefixes and suffixes alongside words from the statutory list. Pupils explore word meanings and spelling patterns to strengthen their spelling accuracy and vocabulary. Weekly focuses include:

  • Prefixes: super-, sub-, auto-, anti-, inter-
  • Prefixes: un-, dis-, mis- and re-
  • Suffixes: -ly and -ally
  • Words with the ch sound (scheme, chef, machine)
  • Words ending in gue and que (league, antique, plaque)
  • Year 3 and 4 statutory word list (calendar, February, grammar, history)

Each week begins with a Spelling Rules PowerPoint to introduce the focus and model correct usage before pupils move into independent practice through handwriting tasks, dictation and spelling application activities.

All resources are written by experienced teachers and support the 2025 DfE Writing Framework’s emphasis on accurate spelling and fluent transcription. Combine with the complete SPaG scheme for full coverage from Year 1 to Year 6.
