Year 1 Summer Spelling Resources

Consolidate and apply early spelling knowledge with our Year 1 Summer spelling resources, fully aligned with the National Curriculum and forming part of the Mrs Mactivity SPaG scheme. This spelling strand supports pupils as they continue to apply their phonics knowledge with increasing confidence and independence.

Across the term, you will find a complete set of weekly spelling resources for Year 1, including spelling lists, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check sheets, dictation passages, and handwriting sheets in your chosen font. These resources provide regular opportunities for pupils to practise spelling patterns and build confidence in their writing.

Designed to fit alongside your phonics programme, these resources help pupils make the link between reading and spelling while developing accurate transcription. See below for a full breakdown of the spelling patterns and word types covered across the Summer term.

What Year 1 covers in Summer

The Year 1 Summer spelling strand builds on earlier learning, introducing new patterns and revisiting key word types from across the year. These weekly spelling lists combine phonics, vocabulary and word structure to strengthen confidence in independent writing. Weekly focuses include:

  • Words with tch (catch, fetch, witch)
  • Alternative spellings for ear and are (share, care, bear)
  • Common exception words from the Year 1 spelling appendix
  • Compound words (football, playground, bedroom)
  • Words with v at the end (have, live, give)
  • k for the /k/ sound, s/es verbs and comparative endings er/est
  • un prefix and review of all common exception words

These resources can be used to reinforce weekly phonics learning through structured spelling practice, including handwriting tasks, dictation and spelling application activities.

All resources are written by experienced teachers and support the 2025 DfE Writing Framework’s emphasis on accurate spelling and fluent transcription. Combine with the full SPaG scheme for complete progression from Year 1 to Year 6.
