Year 3 Autumn Block 3: Multiplication and Division

Autumn Block 3: Multiplication and Division (Year 3)

Develop pupils’ understanding of multiplication and division in Year 3 with this fully resourced maths block, aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 3 National Curriculum. This unit introduces multiplication and division through equal groups, arrays, multiples and times tables, helping pupils build a secure understanding of how the two operations are connected.

Pupils begin by making and describing equal groups and using arrays to represent multiplication before identifying multiples and exploring sharing and grouping for division. They then develop fluency with the 3, 4 and 8 times tables while applying multiplication and division facts to solve increasingly complex problems.

The sequence supports fluency, reasoning and problem-solving while helping pupils move from practical representations towards efficient mental and written methods.

Week 9 small steps

  • Make and describe equal groups
  • Use arrays
  • Identify multiples of 2
  • Identify multiples of 5
  • Identify multiples of 10

Week 10 small steps

  • Share and group to make equal groups
  • Multiply by 3
  • Divide by 3
  • Explore the 3 times table

Week 11 small steps

  • Multiply by 4
  • Divide by 4
  • Explore the 4 times table
  • Multiply by 8
  • Divide by 8

Week 12 small steps

  • Explore the 8 times table
  • Explore the 2, 4 and 8 times tables
  • Solve problems using the 2, 4 and 8 times tables
  • Complete the Multiplication and Division mini-assessment

National Curriculum objectives

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables
  • Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division
  • Use mental methods and progress to written methods
  • Solve problems involving multiplication and division
  • Apply multiplication and division facts in a range of mathematical contexts

Developing multiplication and division skills in Year 3

This Year 3 multiplication and division block helps pupils develop a secure understanding of multiplication and division through practical activities, visual representations and structured progression. Pupils learn how equal groups, arrays, sharing and grouping can be used to represent mathematical relationships.

As the unit progresses, pupils build fluency with the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables while developing confidence using multiplication and division facts to solve problems. Lessons support pupils in recognising patterns, making connections and applying mathematical reasoning.
