Year 1 Spring Block 4

Spring Block 4: Measurement – Weight and Volume

Develop early measurement understanding with this Year 1 weight, mass, capacity and volume block, aligned with the White Rose small steps and mapped to the Year 1 National Curriculum. Pupils explore comparing and measuring through practical activities using balance scales, containers and hands-on investigation tasks.

The lessons help pupils use and understand key measurement vocabulary including heavier, lighter, full, empty, more than and less than. Through practical exploration, pupils compare mass, investigate capacity and begin solving simple measurement problems using real-life contexts and mathematical discussion.

Week 10 small steps

  • Introduce weight and mass
  • Measure mass
  • Compare mass
  • Solve problems with weight and mass

Week 11 small steps

  • Introduce capacity and volume
  • Measure capacity
  • Compare capacity

National Curriculum objectives

  • Measure and begin to record mass and weight
  • Compare, describe and solve practical problems for mass and weight including heavy/light, heavier than and lighter than
  • Begin to use measuring tools such as balance scales
  • Measure and begin to record capacity and volume

Exploring weight, mass, capacity and volume in Year 1

This Year 1 measurement block helps pupils compare, measure and describe weight, mass, capacity and volume using practical maths activities and real-life contexts. Pupils develop confidence using mathematical vocabulary while investigating objects and containers through hands-on exploration.

Using balance scales, measuring containers and comparison activities, pupils learn to describe and compare measurements using terms such as heavier, lighter, full and empty. The sequence supports early reasoning and discussion while helping pupils apply measurement skills in meaningful situations.

What’s included

  • Detailed Year 1 maths lesson plans linked to White Rose small steps
  • Interactive teaching slides with clear modelling and vocabulary support
  • Differentiated weight, mass, capacity and volume worksheets for Year 1
