In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children typically learn a range of mathematical concepts related to numbers up to 20 and beyond. Here’s an overview of what they might cover:

1. Counting: Children learn to count reliably up to 20 and beyond, understanding that each number represents a quantity.

2. Number recognition: They practise recognising and identifying numbers up to 20 and beyond, both in numeral form and in written form.

3. Number formation: Children learn to correctly form numerals up to 20 and beyond, developing their fine motor skills in the process.

4. Number order: They understand the sequence of numbers up to 20 and beyond, placing them in the correct order.

5. One-to-one correspondence: Children learn that each object being counted corresponds to one number, helping to develop a solid understanding of the concept of quantity.

6. Comparing numbers: They begin to compare quantities, understanding concepts such as more than, less than, and equal to.

7. Subitising: Children develop the ability to recognise the quantity of a small group of objects without counting them individually, which helps build number sense.

8. Addition and subtraction: Basic concepts of addition and subtraction are introduced through practical activities and games, such as combining and separating groups of objects.

9. Patterns and sequences: Children explore and create simple patterns and sequences using numbers and objects.

10. Problem-solving: They engage in mathematical problem-solving activities that encourage critical thinking and reasoning skills, such as solving simple number problems or puzzles.

By covering these foundational concepts, EYFS children build a strong mathematical understanding that will serve as a basis for further learning as they progress through school.
