What is declarative maths knowledge?

The term “declarative math knowledge” typically refers to knowledge that involves stating or declaring facts, concepts, or information related to mathematics. Declarative knowledge contrasts with procedural knowledge, which involves knowing how to perform specific procedures or operations.

In the context of mathematics, declarative knowledge would encompass understanding mathematical concepts, definitions, theorems, and properties. It involves being able to state mathematical facts and principles. For example, knowing that the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees or understanding the properties of prime numbers are examples of declarative math knowledge.

Declarative knowledge is foundational in mathematics education, providing the basis for more advanced problem-solving and procedural skills. However, it’s essential to complement declarative knowledge with procedural and conceptual understanding to develop a well-rounded mathematical proficiency.
