The Summer term section of our Year 3 SPaG scheme includes seven carefully sequenced grammar lessons based on the small steps within the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation. The lessons develop pupils’ understanding of word families, sentence structure and the organisation of longer pieces of writing.
Each lesson includes a Year 3 SPaG PowerPoint, a practical activity and differentiated worksheets. The PowerPoints provide clear explanations, examples and guided practice, while the activities and worksheets give pupils opportunities to discuss, identify and apply each grammar objective.
During the term, pupils explore word families before learning to generate and use conjunctions, prepositions and adverbs to express time, place and cause. They also identify main and subordinate clauses and begin to organise related material using paragraphs, headings and sub-headings.
The scheme also includes Year 3 SPaG assessments in the style of GPS tests, with mark schemes and answers, as well as an assessment tracker, lesson plans and a termly overview to support planning, curriculum coverage and progress monitoring.
The accompanying Year 3 Summer spelling resources sit alongside the grammar lessons, supporting the teaching and application of spelling patterns throughout the term.
Sessions are designed to last approximately 15–30 minutes and can be used as standalone SPaG lessons or incorporated into wider English teaching. Read more about our suggested SPaG timetabling and lesson structure.
