There are 7 lessons in the Summer block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.
Each lesson has a PowerPoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet.
The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels : less able and more able. The less challenging resources tend to use simpler vocabulary and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.
Each lesson plan also includes ideas for additional or continuous provision activities.
The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will be covering in Year 3. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.
Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.
Each session lasts 15 – 30 minutes depending on the age of the children and the complexity of the skills/knowledge being taught. The lessons are designed to be stand-alone though could be incorporated as part of the main English lesson.
The following small steps are covered this term:
✅ Recognise how word families are related in form and meaning
✅ Generate and use conjunctions to express time, place and cause (including although, since, until)
✅ Identify main and subordinate clauses in sentences
✅ Start to use paragraphs as a way to group related material
✅ Use headings and sub-headings to aid presentation
✅ Generate and use prepositions to express time, place and cause
✅ Generate and use adverbs to express time, place and cause
Our Year 3 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) scheme for the Summer Term helps pupils refine their grammar skills, preparing them for more advanced writing tasks. This term’s lessons focus on sentence structure, paragraphing, and extending vocabulary through conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions. Aligned with the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation, this structured scheme ensures clear progression in writing fluency.
Pupils will develop a deeper understanding of word families, learning how words relate in meaning and form. They will also begin to structure their writing using paragraphs, headings, and subheadings while strengthening their ability to express time, place, and cause with a variety of grammatical features.
The Year 3 SPaG Summer Term scheme covers the following small steps:
Each lesson includes engaging PowerPoint slides, interactive activities, and differentiated worksheets, ensuring that pupils grasp key grammar concepts and can apply them in writing tasks. The structured approach helps children build confidence while working independently.
The Year 3 SPaG scheme in the Summer Term encourages pupils to organise their writing more effectively. Lessons focus on recognising key sentence components, using paragraphs for clarity, and implementing headings and subheadings to improve presentation. Pupils also strengthen their understanding of word families, helping them expand their vocabulary and spelling skills.
Conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions are explored in greater depth, enabling pupils to express time, place, and cause in more sophisticated ways. The lessons support pupils in linking ideas clearly, creating more detailed and meaningful written work.
Our SPaG scheme for Year 3 is designed to provide structured, engaging lessons that help pupils develop essential grammar skills. With a strong focus on sentence construction, paragraphing, and writing fluency, this scheme prepares pupils for more independent and structured writing.
Key benefits of our Year 3 SPaG Summer Term scheme include:
By the end of Year 3, pupils should confidently use paragraphs, conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions to structure their writing. They should also understand sentence components such as main and subordinate clauses.
Teaching paragraphing in Year 3 should involve identifying themes within a text, using writing prompts to practise grouping ideas, and exploring how headings and subheadings support structure. Modelling and guided writing tasks are particularly effective.
Encouraging the use of conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions is key to developing sentence complexity. Providing sentence starters, matching exercises, and oral storytelling activities can help pupils naturally extend their sentences.
