In Spring Block 5: Building 9 and 10, pupils will explore numbers 9 and 10 in depth, developing their understanding of number bonds, subitising, and the composition of numbers. Through practical, engaging activities, pupils will gain confidence in working with these key numbers and expand their number sense.
Week 8: Exploring Numbers 9 and 10
In Week 8, pupils will focus on numbers 9 and 10, exploring how to represent, compare, and subitise these numbers.
– Find 9 and 10 – Pupils will begin by recognising the numbers 9 and 10 in various contexts. Through activities such as counting objects and identifying numbers, pupils will become familiar with these numbers and their place in the number system.
– Compare numbers within 10 – Pupils will practise comparing numbers up to 10, using language such as greater than, less than, and equal to. They will engage in activities where they compare the size of numbers and arrange them in order, deepening their understanding of number relationships.
– Represent 9 and 10 – Pupils will represent the numbers 9 and 10 in different ways, such as through drawings, objects, and number lines. This helps reinforce their understanding of the quantity each number represents.
– Conceptually subitise to 10 – Subitising, or recognising quantities without counting, is a key skill. Pupils will work on subitising to 10, identifying quantities quickly and accurately in a range of activities.
Week 9: Exploring Number Bonds and Composition
In Week 9, pupils will explore the composition of numbers 9 and 10 and how they relate to number bonds.
– One more up to 10 – Pupils will practise recognising what happens when one is added to a number up to 10, reinforcing their understanding of number sequences.
– One less within 10 – Pupils will also explore what happens when one is subtracted from a number within 10, supporting their understanding of the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
– Explore the composition of numbers to 10 – Pupils will investigate how numbers up to 10 can be made up of smaller parts. They will use visual aids like counters or blocks to break down numbers and understand their composition.
– Explore number bonds to 10 (2 parts) – Pupils will explore how the number 10 can be broken down into two parts. Through hands-on activities, they will recognise different number bonds that make 10, such as 5 + 5 or 6 + 4.
– Explore and make arrangements of 10 – Pupils will engage in activities where they arrange objects or numbers to make 10 in different ways, reinforcing their understanding of number bonds and composition.
Week 10: Doubles and Odd/Even Numbers
In Week 10, pupils will explore doubles, odd and even numbers, and continue their work with number bonds.
– Explore number bonds to 10 (3 parts) – Pupils will investigate how to break down 10 into three parts. They will use visual aids and manipulatives to explore different combinations of numbers that add up to 10.
– Find doubles to 10 – Pupils will practise recognising and making doubles up to 10, such as 1 + 1, 2 + 2, and so on. This helps reinforce their understanding of addition and multiplication concepts.
– Make doubles to 10 – Pupils will engage in activities where they create doubles to 10 using objects or drawings. This reinforces the concept of doubling and supports their fluency with basic addition facts.
– Explore odd and even numbers – Pupils will explore the concept of odd and even numbers, recognising that even numbers can be split into two equal groups, while odd numbers cannot.
By the end of Spring Block 5, pupils will have a solid understanding of the numbers 9 and 10, including their composition, number bonds, and relationships to other numbers. These activities will lay the foundation for further number work in later blocks.
